Maine Democrats have censured Rep. Laurel Libby for speaking up for women and girls and advocating for fairness and safety in girls' sports. As a result, her voice has been silenced, her vote canceled, and her 9,000 constituents have been stripped of their representation in the State House — all for stating an objective, common-sense truth.
This blatant attack on free speech cannot go unchallenged.
With just a simple majority vote, Democrats were able to censure and silence Rep. Libby, bypassing the two-thirds threshold required for expulsion. This sets a dangerous precedent—if a majority party can so easily strip an elected representative of their voice and vote, no dissenting opinion is safe.
Laurel spoke up because Maine girls deserve a fair, safe, and level playing field in sports. They deserve leaders who will stand for them, even when it’s unpopular. If she can be silenced for defending them, who will be next? Now, more than ever, we must fight to protect free speech and ensure that those willing to stand up for what is right are not silenced.
That’s why Laurel has now taken legal action, filing a lawsuit to challenge this unconstitutional censure and restore the voice and vote of her constituents. This fight is not just about one representative—it’s about defending the right of every elected official to speak freely without fear of political retribution.
We must push back against this unconstitutional overreach and defend Rep. Libby's right to speak and serve.
