In a democracy the function of public school teachers is to teach their students how to think, not tell them what to think. Yet across America today, K-12 teachers are openly advocating for political candidates and imposing curricula on their students that promote controversial social and political views backed by the authority of the classroom.

Here is testimony about one revealing incident from a 16-year-old student at Edina High, an upscale school in Minnesota: “The day after Trump won was even harder. Teachers were crying alongside students in the classroom. Speeches by teachers included the phrase ‘we will make it through this together.’ One teacher said in front of a class of 100, through tears that ‘the election was rigged.’ Teachers bashed President Trump in front of their students, and people continued to bully me for my views. … I had to have my mom come pick me up after third hour that day. I couldn’t stand to walk around a school filled with both teachers and students crying and looking to me through their tears with hurtful eyes. I’m not kidding when I say so many people were crying that walking through school felt like someone had died or something.”

This would have been just as bad if the teachers were celebrating Trump’s victory. The purpose of an education in a democracy is to teach students how to think, not to fill their heads with the prejudices of their teachers on controversial issues both social and political. If we continue to turn a blind eye to these practices, our democracy may well not survive. It’s time to take measures to restore the integrity – and neutrality – of our K-12 classrooms.

Now you can take a stand against K-12 indoctrination by helping the David Horowitz Freedom Center lead the fight for states to adopt a Code of Ethics for K-12 Teachers, which forbids teachers to use their classrooms for political, ideological, or religious advocacy. Teachers in violation of the Code would be subject to penalties such as probation, suspension and loss of their teaching licenses.
