The CARES Act recently signed by President Trump provides some changes designed to encourage charitable contributions. For taxpayers who don’t itemize their charitable deductions, the Act adds a new “above-the-line” deduction for charitable contributions up to $300 other than those made to private foundations and donor-advised funds. This is a permanent change, and the Thomas More Society qualifies as a charity for this purpose. For those considering larger donations, the Act raises cash contribution limits based on adjusted gross income (AGI) from 50 percent to 100 percent, thereby allowing greater current-year tax benefits.
