Stop the $750 Million Blank Check.
On August 4, Oakland County votes on a brand-new property tax for schools — 1.5 mills, for six years. The ballot calls it "new," "additional," and "increased." Those are their words, not ours.
It raises about $126 million in the first year alone, and roughly $750 million or more over six years by the school district's own per-pupil math. And here's the problem: the ballot doesn't require a single dollar to go to teachers, classrooms, safety, or mental health. It says "operating purposes," and each of 28 districts decides later, on its own.
That's not a plan. That's a blank check.
Oakland County already carries the highest property taxes in Michigan. This stacks more on top — for homeowners, for seniors on fixed incomes, for renters whose landlords pass it along, and for the small businesses already squeezed by every other rising cost.
- A typical $300,000 home will pay ~$1,350
- A $500,000 home will pay ~$2,250
- A small business in a $500,000 building will pay ~$4,500
If they want more of our money, they owe us a plan.
Ballots go out June 25. We have to reach voters first—and that takes mail, signs, and ads. Your donation pays for all three.
