WAIDF on Lopez Island
Join us for a Washington State Extended Learning Trip to Lopez Island from Friday, September 11 to Sunday, September 13, with local host and guide Mary Bywater Cross. Mary is a longtime Lopez Islander, quilt historian, and independent scholar who has spent decades documenting the stories of women across the Pacific Northwest. Mary is generously opening her home and sharing her deep connections to the island to give WAIDF an authentic Lopez experience.
We'll kick off Friday with a reception on Mary's beach and deck, and on Saturday, we'll connect with the Lopez Community Land Trust, meet women farmers with the San Juan Islands Agricultural Guild, hear from a local council member, and visit the Lopez Island Grange. Plus, your hosts will provide plenty of time to grab food at local spots, go on hikes, visit beaches, rent bikes, kayaks, and canoes, and get some rest at the cabin. For Sunday? To keep our group together for the full island experience, WAIDF is coordinating shared accommodations at one vacation rental (plus an option to rent a nearby cottage studio) so we can gather, cook, and unwind as one community all weekend – but you're more than welcome to book your own accommodations elsewhere on Lopez if you'd prefer extra privacy or flexibility.
Our rental is located a half mile from the Lopez Island Ferry Landing. It's a 20-minute walk to Odlin County Park, a 10-minute drive to Lopez Island Vineyards and Winery, and a 17-minute drive to the Lopez Island Historical Museum.
The rental includes four bedrooms and sleeps up to 13. Accommodations listed below correspond to the booking options (on the right-hand side):
Bedroom 1 has a sweeping view of the water, a private bath, and log furniture (1 queen bed, sleeps 1–2)
Bedroom 2, on the main floor, has two queen beds (sleeps 2–4)
Bedroom 3, in the basement, has a queen bed and a bunk bed (double below, twin above); sleeps 4–5
Bonus Room, also in the basement, has a double futon, along with a ping pong table, big-screen TV, and fireplace (sleeps 1–2)
The living room has a fireplace and a big-screen TV. Every level has its own bathroom, and there's a private hot tub on the lower level as well. The dining table seats eight. In total, the house has three baths, three decks, two TVs, two fireplaces, satellite TV, and free Wi-Fi.
We can also reserve a Cottage Studio (with a double bed and double futon that sleep up to 4) – if booked by August 10. Amenities include a hot tub, Wi-Fi, parking, full kitchen, outdoor space, and barbecue grill.
