Tallahassee has welcomed refugees for many years. Refugees are screened and accepted by the United States government and assisted in resettlement by the Tallahassee office of the International Rescue Committee (IRC). These families come having experienced extreme hardship yet eager to gain English skills, learn local customs, and to obtain jobs to become productive members of our community.

The IRC’s resources are limited due to significant cuts to federal resettlement agencies. By donating to the Refugee Emergency Housing Fund, you can help refugee families that are referred to ECHO by IRC. The fund will be used to help families that have encountered financial difficulties with rent payments to prevent eviction and to build toward self-sufficiency with an approved plan going forward. This fund ensures that referred and screened refugees can maintain their current or more appropriate housing. It is not an unlimited income stream, referrals are made on a case-by-case basis within established limits.

If you, your organization or faith community wishes to assist refugees beyond donating to the fund, there are opportunities to volunteer by contacting the local IRC office.
